Isabella Valancy Crawford: Irish-Canadian Poet

Isabella Valancy Crawford, leading 19th century Canadian poet, was born in Dublin Ireland and emigrated with her family to Ontario, Canada in the 1850’s. She lived in North Douro,Peterborough,and Toronto. In 1857, her father and siblings died leaving Isabella to care for her invalid mother. Her work was mostly published in New York papers. It was with J.W. Garvin's The Collected Poems of Isabella Valancy Crawford (1905) and Katherine Hale's Isabella Valancy Crawford (1923) that she started to gain recognition as a serious writer.and received little recognition.

Isabella Valancy Crawford's final resting place is in Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough Ontario.
